Fly Rugs Guide
  • Designed to help keep pesky flies away from your horse while they're in the field a fly rug can help keep your horse more comfortable in the warmer months.
  • Most come with a neck, either attached or detachable, which will help make sure your horse is protected all over.
  • Typically coming in light colours (to help reflect the rays of the sun) all of these rugs will over some kind of UV protection. This may help limited 'bleaching' of the coat and help keep darker coloured horses cooler.
  • Some rugs will have been tested to establish the amount of UV protection they offer. This may be helpful for horses who really need protection from the sun.
  • Most fly rugs are made from a woven, mesh like material which allows air to flow through but stops the flies biting. This type is suitable for most horses.
  • Some rugs are classified as 'sweet-itch' or 'midge-proof'. These are typically made from a denser fabric that won't allow the midges access. They inevitably are warmer rugs and maybe too hot for some horses in the warmest weather.
  • Added extras to look out for are things such as: belly flaps; extra big tail flaps and super deep length. These all help to cover as much of the horse as possible. You can also find hybrid rugs - typically a mesh rug with a waterproof panel along the back. Designed to help keep the worst of any summer showers off your horse's back.

Fly Rugs Care Guide
  • By their nature, mesh style fly rugs are less durable and more prone to tearing than standard turnout rugs.
  • Look for tougher rugs (like the Rambo Protector) or choose a sweet-itch version if your horse is a bit of a rug wreaker as these are likely to be more durable.
  • Check and clean straps, fittings and stitching regularly
  • Keep rugs in a dry and airy place when not in use
  • Wash rugs at 30°C with a mild, non-biological soap and leave to line or drip dry - do NOT tumble dry or dry clean

Care Instructions

To keep your rug in top condition follow these easy steps:

Inspect for wear and tear:

  • Check fabric for small tears
  • Check all stitching for loose threads
  • Check buckles for rusting or bending
  • Ideally rotate rugs to allow moisture to evaporate

Cleaning your horse rug

While we would always recommend sending your rug to a professional rug cleaning company, however it is possible to keep your rug in good condition at home.

  • Lay over a fence and using a firm bristled brush, brush off dry mud
  • Turnover and repeat process to remove hair on the underside of the rug
  • Your rug can be washed in the washing machine – always check the care instructions first
  • Use natural soap flakes or a specific rug wash detergent, especially if the rug is waterproof, to preserve the weather resistance
  • Air dry
Sizing Information

To ensure that your rug fits perfectly measure your horse in feet and inches from centre of the chest to his buttocks in line with the dock. This will give you the bottom measurement of the rug.
