How to put a hat silk on a riding hat

Putting a hat silk onto a jockey skull can be harder than it looks. There’s a knack to ensure your silk goes on with ease and looks great when it’s there.

Did you know that the outside of a jockey skill is textured? This is to help keep your hat silk in place when you’re riding and to stop it from pinging off when you’re on your horse!

How to put a hat silk on a jockey skull:

  1. Put your hat silk down on a table or solid surface
  2. Take your silk and put the peak half way down the front before pulling the rest of the silk down over the back of the jockey skull.
  3. Once you have the hat silk in place at the back of the hat, you can start to pull the peaked side down at the front, and pull the sides around the edge of the hat to get it really secure and level.
  4. You don’t want your hat silk to be too far down at the front, it needs to sit nicely above the front of the hat. If it drops below the rim of your hat, the peak could interfere with your vision and there’s also the tendency to put your skullcap too far back on your head and not in the position it should be in.
  5. Make sure that the back of the silk is right down over the back of the hat to keep it in place and to keep it neat and tidy.
